the first time, the Sunday New York World printed a puzzle called
„word-cross“ in the „Fun“ Section. Arthur
Wynne from Liverpool created a diamond-shaped „word-cross“
with no black holes. After a few weeks the name was changed from
Word-cross to the well known Cross-word.
By now, the crossword puzzle is the most famous and popular puzzle
in the world.
It started success after the first print On December 21, 1913
in a newspapier, It continued appear every week. The readers loved
Wynne's really new puzzle. New York Times was one of the last
newspapers, publishing regular a new crossword puzzle. The Times
said in November 1924 the crossword phenomenon was „temporary
madness“ and after 2 years in February 1927 the called it
the „crossword epidemic“
